How to Connect a Home Theater to a Satellite TV System

Setting up a home theater that is connected to your satellite receiver is one way to optimize your satellite TV subscription. Amplify your satellite TV system with your home theater’s surround sound components. You can also switch several devices like DVD players, VCRs and other audio systems with this set-up.

Here’s how:

Prepare the following: satellite receiver, home theater receiver, coaxial cable, composite/component or HDMI video cable, stereo RCA audio cable and an optical digital audio cable.

Connect the coaxial cable to the input jack of your satellite receiver.

Connect the video output of your satellite receiver to the inputs at the back of your home theater receiver.

Hook your satellite receiver with your home theater receiver through the respective ports present in the 2 components. Composite cables are available on most modern devices but they offer only analog signal with inferior video quality and no HD capabilities. Component cables on the other hand can transmit full HD video and are also common in today’s modern receivers. The best port is HDMI which is a single cable that transmits the highest quality, all-digital signal.

Connect the audio output of your satellite receiver to your home theater receiver. Use the receiver's digital audio out and an optical cable to connect to the home theater, if possible. This will enable digital audio streams in your surround sound system. Otherwise, use a standard stereo RCA cable instead.

Connect the video output of your home theater system to the video input of your TV with the same cables type. This will enable you to receive consistent images in your TV.

Secure all connections.

Turn on your television, satellite receiver and home theater system for testing. Check your video and sound output.
